Book news

I am holding 'Cave to Compass. A shaft of sunlight. Wooden floor. Bookcase with notebooks and books.

It is said to be incurable, so fibromyalgia recovery stories are in short supply. I live with the syndrome. Thankfully, flare-ups are rare for me these days.

Looking back through the calm lens of hindsight is like viewing a landscape from a mountain top. Easy. But when I was unwell, nothing was easy!

My life felt in tatters due to chronic pain. It was exhausting, so I was glad of a diagnosis. However, fibro information was not easy to access.

It took years, and many failed attempts, before I figured out what would help. All of that happened at a time when daily internet access and smart phones were not yet part of Irish life.

Recovery

When I felt well enough, I studied sociology at postgraduate level. Reading about global health was fascinating, especially when I started looking into fibromyalgia worldwide.

Later, I received an Arts in Medicine fellowship that brought creatives and medics together in a unique way for three months.

I was the only person from Ireland to be awarded a fellowship that year (2023), and I was invited to co-present the closing ceremony. In honour of the experience, I also wrote a poem. The international programme boosted my confidence, and I returned to my idea of writing a fibromyalgia book.

Holistic and scientific

We live in a time when abundance of complex information is available, but there’s not much engagement with the clinical studies.

My goal was to create a resource that offers hope. The book includes rejuvenation techniques that have helped me. You will also learn about A.B.L.E. – an original process I created to guide personal mapping.
